The last week of December, 2011

At Heartroot Farm, the land is currently covered in a fluffy layer of snow (just in time for the solstice and holy-days!) and wrapped in deep, soft silence.

We have a strong conviction that the extension (to-be four-season performance space, workshop and kitchen space, etc. ) is going to get finished this year. The past few months have in many ways entailed ‘working up’ to this point: networking, throwing around different ideas and designs and orders of events.

Some local friends came and filmed a short promotional video this autumn – we will be launching a crowd-funding project at the Equinox celebration in March (most likely through the ‘Kapipa’ site…)! Another friend from the area, Alexandre Maheux, who designs and builds beautifully and ecologically, will be heading up the project. We will of course need lots of volunteers on the physical side of things: you are all very welcome to join us – and to learn some building skills or brush up on what you already know  - between the end of May and the beginning of November when work will be going on… We’ll need as much help as possible in spreading the word once we launch the crowd-funding project, so please keep your eyes peeled and share it with your friends and families once we get it going…We are excited to see this project moving forward and look forward to creating as much Art at the Heart as we possibly can!

We’ve decided to start planting the first seeds of a maple-syrup CSA  – a logical way, it seems, to be able to recommence traditional maple-syrup making at Heartroot – and are looking for interested parties in the Lac-Mégantic and Montreal areas (winkwink, nudgenudge…!)

Aside from momentum-building, we also began work on a few of the design plans laid out during the Permaculture Design course this summer:

The fence from the road to the barn was moved further back and others removed so that we can eventually expand parking near the house (making a U-shaped driveway with an entrance and an exit). A pond was dug by the barn and a load of local slate spread in the area just at the entrance to the stable, and canals made as well to help drain the flow of water that comes down the hill and accumulates. The problem hasn’t been fully solved yet by these measures – we may need a couple more loads of slate next year. We reclaimed the storage space above the stable for hay, and the animals are now fed through the trap-door in the floor – easy! A  third spiral was added to our garden, completing the triskelion that we’d intended. The sea of kale that was left over after we had done all the eating and freezing and kale pesto-making we could handle can still be used to supplement the animals’ winter rations.

We had our neighbour come in with his back-hoe and bring some clay up from an area beside the path down in the forest – he then patted the hole down into a heart-shaped pond which we will work on landscaping next year….

The other big piece this fall was construction on the house–we received a grant to winterize it and had all the windows changed, fixed a leaking roof area and drafty doorway. We’ve never been so cozy in our lives! We also got the entire balcony redone (by the afore-mentioned Alexandre Maheux) and now have a gorgeous wrap-around staircase to extend our stoop-sitting capacity!  Most of the wood used in construction was from our forest as we got some of huge fallen trees brought out and milled. The balcony that overlooks the garden was rebuilt as well so it is solid – it will be an easy and secure foundation from which to build a greenhouse.

In there we also had our Autumn Equinox retreat and celebration and a pretty constant stream of visitors from all over the world, not to mention garden work, food storage , etc.

Then Kyra went off to sing and write her way through Europe (Ireland in particular) for almost three months: you can read all about it at www.kyras.net/blog . I also crossed the Pond, and wrote about some of it: http://dawnbramadat.wordpress.com. We were blessed to have Megan Hyslop with us over the summer, and it was she who held down the fort while Kyra and I were away. Magali Coursange, our neighbour across the road, is also of great help when we need to be away and the animals need to be fed….

We are planning to produce more of a CD that has sold out again (3 runs so far!), “Chants from Heartroot”, and to produce the visualizations that are now on our website as a boxed set – these are products that can then be sold at conferences and courses, as well as from the website. In view of the changing times, and to strengthen Heartroot’s vocation as a place of refuge, we have gone from fee-per-visit to a donation basis for the celebrations and equinox and solstice retreats. This has had the effect of removing the vendor-consumer relationship with visitors to the Farm, and is a great relief. Now we need to establish a regular donor base, to continue developing tangible saleable products, and to host non-Heartroot events as revenue sources.

Our website has been upgraded to www.heartrootfarm.com, which will give us more options for video links and more advanced graphics. It is our intention to make a few teaching videos on YouTube, filmed at different spots around the Farm, and put them on the website as well.

All in all, it’s been a pretty busy growing season!

We want to thank all of you who came to visit, or who have otherwise encouraged us. There has been an enormous shift that your Presence has helped to midwife – we are forever grateful.

Alors…nous allons faire une méditation de groupe à Montréal le 18 décembre  à 11h, suivie par un repas communautaire qui serait notre célébration de la saison en ville. Venez en grand nombre – surtout si vous ne pouvez pas venir à la Ferme. Notre communauté est d’une grande force – célébrons-la!

Ok…It’s clear to me now that we need to celebrate the Winter Solstice on the actual day of the solstice this year, with no shifting of the dates to accommodate everyone’s individual schedules. Having made this decision, I feel relieved, which is a good sign..! So…we will do a group meditation in Montreal on Dec.18th, followed by a pot-luck meal that will be our season’s celebration in town. Come one, come all!, especially those who can not make it to the Farm. Our community is strong and nourishing – let’s celebrate it!

La semaine qui suit, nous allons fêter et faire un rituel  pour la renaissance de la Lumière. Ceci me semble très très pertinent cette année…..et comme d’habitude, le rituel sera construit selon les participants …. Vous êtes bienvenus à la Ferme entre le 20 et le 23 décembre – le rituel sera le 22 décembre (jeudi)…..

The following week, we will celebrate and do a ritual for this time of the rebirth of the Light. This seems to me to be very very pertinent this year….and as usual, the ritual will be constructed depending on its participants…You are welcome at the Farm from Dec. 20 – 23 – the ritual will be on Dec.22 (Thursday).

Nous sommes dans la partie la plus sombre de l’année – dans la plus grande noirceur dans tous les sens du mot. Les peines et les douleurs, les difficultés dans vos relations avec le monde et avec vous-même, les troubles financiers, les nœuds constants qui semblent vous bloquer à chaque tour – tout cela est de passage : des nuages dans le ciel. Observez ce qui monte avec cette conscience de son impermanence, et vous ne serez pas inondé ni noyé …. Rappelez-vous de la Lumière que vous êtes, et aller briller!

We are in the darkest part of the year – in the greatest darkness, in every sense of the word. The pain sorrow, the difficulties in your relationships with others and with yourself, the financial troubles, the knots that constantly seem to block your path at every turn – all this is tyransitory: clouds passing in the sky. Observe what arises with this awareness of its impermanence and you will be neither flooded nor drowned by it all. Remember the Light that you are, and go and Shine !

Nous sommes sur le seuil de l’automne – la retraite pour l’équinoxe va avoir lieu la semaine prochaine, avec la tente de sudation la fin de semaine du 16 – 18 septembre.

We are on the threshold of Autumn – the Equinox Retreat is next week, with the sweatlodge on the weekend of Sept.16-18.

Nous avons entrepris beaucoup de transformations à la Ferme Racine du Coeur cet été, un petit pas à la fois – ça se voit et ça fait du bien!

We’ve undertaken quite a few changes at HeartRoot Farm this summer – they’ve made a visible and welcome difference….

Les travaux n’ont pas été seulment physique – nous avons accueilli plusièures personnes à la Ferme cet été en différents niveaux de crise et de réflexion. J’ai passé beaucoup de mon temps avec des gens, en campagne et en ville,  en état d’urgence – c’est tout simplement la sorte de temps que nous experimentons actuellement. Souvent, ces personnes n’avaient pas de l’argent à donner en échange pour mes services.

The work that’s been done has not only been physical – we’ve welcomed many people at the Farm this summer in varying states of crisis and reflection. I have spent much of my time with people, in the country and in the city, in states of emergency – this is just the sort of time we’ve living through now. Many of these people were not able to make financial contributions for my services.

La Ferme s’ouvre, je trouve, à sa vocation de refuge pour tous ceux qui peuvent en avoir besoin et j’en suis reconnaissante – mon coeur est comblé. En meme temps, cette période de l’année est toujours un peu…étirée…à la Ferme Racine du Coeur. Avec la diminution de remuneration pour mon travail, nous le sommes même plus que d’habitude.

The Farm is opening, I feel, to its vocation as a place of refuge for those in need, and I am grateful for this. At the same time, this period of the year is always a bit…stretched… at Heartroot Farm – with the decrease in remuneration for my work, we are even more so than usual.

Tout cela pour vous dire que si vous êtes capable et appelé de:

There will be meditation and singing, time alone and sharing with others, focusing on what feels essential, urgent and ready to transform…

We will most likely do a sweat during this retreat….

Les feuilles devraient être changées en or et en rouge, et la recolte débutée….

Nous allons faire du cobb, rentrer du bois pour le froid qui vient, et recolter et préserver de l’abondance des champs et du jardin….

Il va avoir de la méditation et du chant, du temps seul et en partageant avec autres, se concentrant sur se qui semble essentiel, urgent et prêt à se transformer….

Nous allons fort probablement faire une tente de sudation pendant cette retraite…..

Entre le 11 et le 13 août, la Terre passe dans le coeur des Perséides – des météores qui se trouvent dans la queue du comet Swift-Tuttle, et qui créent une pluie abondante d’étoiles filantes.

Il me semble que nous commençons quelque chose de nouvelle et excitante, alors célébrons les Perséides comme des feux d’artifices, marquant une nouvelle réalité planétaire d’unicité, d’harmonie et d’interdépendance – une réalité que nous préparons depuis si longtemps…. On y arrive!

Les offrands de la semaine du 10 – 17 août peuvent inclure:

10 août:  Atelier de Salsa (style pieds nus) 19h-2030. Pas d’experience necessaire, pas de partenaire necessaire!

Cobb à coup de pieds!  Aidez-nous à créer le mélange d’argile et de sable qui deviendra notre nouveau plancher!

AUGUST 10-17      Summer Perseid Shower Gathering    2011

The Perseid meteor shower, called Perseids because they seem to fly out of the constellation Perseus, is caused by debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle. Every 133 years this comet passes through the solar system and leaves behind a trail of dust and gravel. When Earth passes through the trail, debris hits the atmosphere at 140,000 mph and burns up, creating what we see as “falling stars”. Between August 11th and 13th the Earth passes through the heart of the comet’s tail, and there are so many falling stars that they’re called “showers”. 

To me this year feels as if we are beginning something new and exciting… so let’s celebrate the Perseid Shower as a baby shower – for the new planetary reality of Oneness, Harmony and Interdependence that we have been preparing for so long…. We’re almost there!

Offerings during the week of August 10 -17 include:

Cette période du 10 au 17 août va remplacer les 2 activités du Camp d’École Libre et de la Retraite pour Artistes. Nous allons tout emballer ensemble!

I’ve decided, based on comment from several people, to invite you to come to the Farm from August 10 – 17 – the period when the Perseid showers are at their height.

The Mégantic area is one of the first, if not THE first, to declare itself a light-pollution-free zone, due to the importance of the work at Mount Megantic’s Astro-Lab.

This period, from August 10 – 17, will replace the 2 previous activities of the Free School Camp and the Artists’ Retreat – we’re going to roll everything up together !

The 13th we will also celebrate Kyra’s birthday -  bring your instruments, your work clothes and your bathing suit!

When:  October 11-19, 2011. The first and last days are traveling days.

Price: 1200 euros, all included, except travel to and from Italy. We will pick you up at the Rome (Fiumicino) airport on Oct.11 and bring you back on Oct. 19.

We have consciously crossed the thresholds of so many equinoxes and solstices here at Heartroot Farm, each one miraculously unique, with its own personality, challenges and magic. We never know who will be here or exactly what we are going to end up doing – just that it is always perfectly tailored to the needs of the participants and the land.

Depuis l’éqinoxe d’automne de l’année passée il y a eu des changements qui m’ont beaucoup soulagés en particulière – les dernières vestiges de notre passée psychothérapeutique se sont fondu et  les gens viennent maintenant vraiment pour participer aux activités de la Ferme, pour prendre le temps de célébrer la Vie et pour se connecter à l’esprit avec autres personnes qui ont des intentions semblables. De plus en plus d’âmes semblent trouver le chemin de retour  – notre communauté s’approfondit…..

Since the Autumn Equinox last year the shift in energies has been a source of great relief to me in particular, as the last vestiges of our psychotherapeutic past have melted away and people are truly coming to participate in the Farm, to take the time to celebrate Life and to connect to Spirit with like-minded others…..More and more souls seem to be finding their way back to us as our community deepens.

We will need help with the gardens this year – it is time to make this the principal focus of our energies. Please pass the word about the Earth Activist – Permaculture Certification Course taking place at the Farm at the end of June + beginning of July…. Our future lies in active stewardship and conscious interdependence with Gaia – come learn so you can teach others….

Avant notre Méditation de Groupe à Montréal dimanche le 27 mars, nous allons discuter nos plans pour étendre et les jardins et les résidences disponibles à la Ferme.

Before our Group Meditation in Montreal on Sunday, March 27, we will discuss plans to  expand both the gardens and the available residences at the Farm.

Si vous êtes intéressé d’avoir une session avec moi, prière de noter que je serais beaucoup à la Ferme entre maintenant et le 12 avril, date de mon départ pour l’Europe. Je serais de retour en mi-juin – à l’heure pour la plantation…Pendant la saison estivale, je vais être surtout dans les jardins….

If you are interested in seeing me for a session before I leave for Europe, please note that I will be here at the Farm for much of the time between now and April 12, when I leave, so please book your appointment soon.  I will be away until the second week in June, back in time for planting ! Throughout the summer season I imagine I’ll mostly be in the garden….
